Mosaic art on the Great Allegheny Passage
A place to replenish, restore, and treat yourself to art or homemade ice cream.
Sager Mosaics is a small art studio located near Mile Marker 104 on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). The Studio has become a magical respite for bikers on the trail between West Newton and Perryopolis as well as a place for thru-riders to replenish, restore, and enjoy art or homemade ice cream.
The studio carries mosaic art by Rachel Sager, one-of-a-kind micro-mosaic jewelry, handmade greeting cards and postcards, and GAP gifts. Rachel’s work combines unique local materials including foraged Pennsylvania stone and artifacts with hand-pulled filati, malmischiato, 24K gold smalti and other foraged and exotic materials.
Home of The Ruins Project
The Ruins Project is a permanent exhibition of mosaic art sited on the structures of an abandoned coal mine. The installation is on private property, and can only be visited via guided tour. Tours are available by appointment only.
We come from coal
My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather mined coal all along the river valleys of The Rust Belt in Southwestern Pennsylvania. As a child, I soaked in the big picture of local geology and have watched it come full circle in a very surprising way. I use the art of mosaic to tell the story of coal.
About Rachel Sager
Rachel digs deep into the earth to illuminate a world that has been left behind. She forages, washes, and cuts native stone, transforming it from raw geology into contemporary mosaic that elevates the human spirit. The rivers, creeks and fields have become a part of her studio as she chooses to skip the middle man and connect directly with the earth beneath her feet.
