Once Upon a Time…
A few weeks ago, The Ruins Project was fortunate to welcome NPR 2017 Kroc Fellow, Adelina Lancianese to its walls and pathways.
The full day she spent here at Rachel Sager Mosaics with myself, the family, local Whitsettites, and a mosaic student taught me what real journalism looks like. I realized that day that possibly the most important quality in a journalist, second even to asking great questions, is the ability to really listen. Maybe its partly because we come from the same part of the world; Adelina comes from coal too. And she also knows how to tell a story.
I have learned that there are a million and one ways to get things wrong when you are telling someone else’s story. It was a true pleasure to hear that short 4-plus minute radio spot go national and get so much right about what is happening here at The Ruins Project.
The story of the 20th century coal miner and that of the contemporary mosaic artist come together here and become more complex; kind of like a time-traveling fairy tale. Except that its really happening.
Take a moment and listen.
